How to Make a Slushie with a Blender

Everyone loves a nice cold slushie especially on a warm sunny day but what happens when you’re at home and it’s too hot to move to the store to buy one? Well if you have a blender and some simple ingredients then a slushie is only a few minutes away.

Making a slushie in a blender is easy. All you need is a blender and some simple ingredients. The ingredients you use depend on the flavor and type of slushie you want to make but the process of making one is always the same. Simply add the ingredients to your blender along with some ice (to keep it cold) and hit the blend button. It couldn’t be simpler. But, there are some steps you can take to make your slushie super special. Let’s take at look at those now.

Basic Slushie Making

Making a slushie is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Add selected ingredients to your blender.
  2. Add ice.
  3. Hit the blend button.

Couldn’t be simpler right?!

Well let’s take a look a few ways you can “spice” up your slushies to make them extra tasty and super cool.

The basic ingredients of a slushie are as follows:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 cup sugar (or sweetner)
  • 2 cups ice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons flavored extract such as Kool-Aid or low calorie equivalent

making slushie in blenderJust put all the ingredients into a good blender and blend until the mixture has reached the type of consistency you like.

Be sure to add the ice. If you leave out the ice then your slushie will not only be warm but will be too liquid-like.

Don’t completely crush the ice in the blender. If you do crush all the ice then simply place some ice in your glass before you pour your drink into it.

As the blender pulverizes the ingredients ithe motion heats up the liquid. However, just 2 cups of ice will keep the liquid cold.

Be careful not to add too much ice to the blender or crush it all as you will water-down your slushie and impair the taste.

Natural Healthy Slushies

To make a slushie the healthy way you need to ditch the food flavoring and opt for real ingredients.

The basic ingredients of a healthy slushie are as follows:

  • 1/2 to 1 small cup of water
  • kitchen syrup or agave
  • 2 cups ice
  • Fruit (such as strawberries or raspberries etc.)

If you put too much water into the mix your slushies will come out as pure liquid because the fruit has water in it. You can always add more water later if you want to.

Then hit the blend button. Stop blending when you have reached the consistency you like.

Taste the slushie for sweetness and if you want it sweeter add a little sugar/sweetener or syrup and blend again.

You can add more ice if you want after blending is complete.

Hybrid Slushies

These slushies taste like healthy slushies but are super fast to make (and not nearly as healthy).

Put all the ingredients into your blender and blend until the mixture has reach the type of consistency you like.

Add extra ice after blending if required.

Sorbet Slushies

You can also get creative with your slushies and make sorbet slushies.

Here is an example of a Watermelon Slushy Sorbet.

You will need:

  • 2 cups of watermelon
  • 3 tablespoons of water
  • 2 tablespoons of lime juice (lemon juice will do if you have no lime)
  • 1/2 cup crushed ice
  • 3 tablespoons of syrup or agave

Start by cutting up your watermelon into cubes. Place them into a container and freeze them.

watermelon sorbet slushieOnce the watermelon has frozen (which won’t take long as its mostly water) you can begin.

Place the watermelon in the blender along with the ice, the lime juice, the syrup and only 2 tablespoons of water.

Be careful with the amount of water you use at first. Once you start blending you can add some more water if you need to.

Your aim is to use only the amount of water needed to keep keep the texture in the blender between a slushy and a sorbet. So less is more!

Taste and add more syrup, a little sugar or sweetener if you want it sweeter. You may find that you need to add more sweetness or less sweetness each time you make this slushie as it really depends on the sweetness of the fruit.

Add more lime juice if you need a bit of an extra kick.

Sprinkle with crystalline colored sugar for added effect.

As a presentation idea why not first carve out the watermelon leaving the shell intact and then serve the slushie inside the carved out watermelon shell!

A Few Tricks To Make Slushies Extra Special

Here are a few things you can add to a slushie to give it a more personal touch and to impress your friends.

Food Coloring

st patricks day slushieYou can add 5 to 10 drops of your favorite food coloring to a slushie to change its color.

This is a fantastic way to celebrate special occasions. For example you can celebrate St. Patrick’s day with a green slushie.

You can even decorate your slushie with colored sugar crystals for added effect.

The example in the image uses green colored sugar crystals and you can see that it really gives the slushie extra appeal.

Combine Colors

multi-colored slushieIf you choose to use colors in your slushies then you can make 2, 3 or even more separate batches of slusies each with a different color.

Simply add one layer of colored slushie onto another layer of different colored slushie to create a multi-colored slushie.

You can make each colored slushie the same flavor (just different colors) or combine flavors for even more effect.

Combine Flavors

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different flavors.

Some flavors go really well together such as strawberry and peach.

If you find a combination that you like in a soft drink then its a pretty sure bet that you will like it in a slushie.

Blender Slushie Recipe (Strawberry)

You will need:

  • 500g of fresh or frozen strawberries (fresh are better)
  • 1 sprig of fresh mint or fresh mint leaves (frozen mint leaves are just as good)
  • 100g of ice cubes
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

If you are using fresh strawberries be sure to pick the remaining bits of leaves from their tops. even though they will blend quite well they can affect the taste of your slushie.

If you are using a mint sprig then take the leaves off and throw away the stalk. It will be the leaves you use in your mixture.

Steps to make a strawberry slushie:

  • Place strawberries and mint leaves in blender.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
  • Now add only enough cold water so that the strawberries are only just covered.
  • Add some ice cubes.
  • Blend.
  • Taste the slushie for sweetness and consistency.
  • Sweeten with a sugar or sweetener or syrup, if needed.
  • Fill a large jug halfway up with ice cubes and pour blended mix over into it.
  • Pour into the jug and stir with a large wooden spoon.
